Turmeric is a perennial plant of the ginger family, native to India and parts of Asia. A highly valued medicinal and culinary herb. Leaf stalks grow to 1m tall in clumps around 1.5 metres wide. Leaves are lance-shaped and floral spikes are around 20cm long with a mild spicy aroma.
Prefers moist, well drained soil in a semi-shade position with morning sun and temperatures of 20°C plus. Goes dormant in winter in the cooler climates. Harvest when the leaves start to wither.
